What to do in each season
Burgas is good beyond summer: spring and autumn are calmer and cheaper, and autumn is also one of the country’s main bird migration routes.
Spring (March – May)
Daytime highs rise from +12 °C in March to +22 °C in May. In late April and early May the Flora flower exhibition (since 1985) is held in the Sea Garden, and late April brings Yachting Week.
Summer (mid-May – September)
Beach season: June to August daytime is about +27–29 °C and the sea averages around 26 °C in summer (23–24 °C in the morning, 29–30 °C by evening). The loudest resort, Sunny Beach, runs roughly from late May to mid-September.
Autumn (September – November)
Up to +25 °C in September and about +13 °C by November. Atanasovsko Lake is a birdwatching spot during the autumn migration; per the guide, more than 70% of the bird species seen in Bulgaria can be seen here. Flamingos are often seen around August.
Winter (December – February)
Daytime averages +7–9 °C and fewer places are open in the resorts. 6 December is the feast of St Nicholas, patron of the city and fishermen. December brings the WDSF Burgas Cup dance-sport event.
